A friendship means being friends. Friends typically like one another. There are many different types of friendships: platonic, business, passionate, emotional, loving, and comradely, to name a few. A friendship is an easy-going type of relationship that may happen between both sexes. We are encouraged to make friends from an early age. We can spend a lot of time with our friends and engage in various fun activities. Having a friend means having someone to rely upon, someone to share our memories with, and someone we can casually talk with. The key is that there is no physical attraction between the partners.

A relationship consists of two partners of either sex who are romantically and/or sexually interested in each other. People in a relationship go out on dates, can even get engaged in the future, and get married. Although there are no set rules that partners must abide by, they still decide what things they want to allow and how serious they want to take it, etc. The partners can have sexual intercourse, unlike in friendships (not the “friend zone”).

Each relationship you have, whether it’s romantic or just a friendship, is built on 3 pillars: trust, acceptance, and forgiveness. You must be able to trust the other party with all you have, you must accept your differences (in opinions especially), and you have to be able to forgive their mistakes. If you forgive someone for their mistakes, you accept their flaws and maintain your trust in that person. Now, you can have 1 without the others: for example, you can forgive someone without trusting them or accepting the differences. In fact, that’s how many ex-romantic relationships tend to work out. Sometimes, the differences in your opinions are too great to accept, and that’s okay. That just means you shouldn’t have a relationship with that person. It wouldn’t be healthy otherwise. If you can’t trust someone, don’t be friends with them. If you can’t forgive something someone did, then stay away from them until you can.

Difference between Friendship and Relationship

  1. Forms of Existence in Friendship and Relationship
One of the main differences between friendship and a relationship is the form in which they are founded. The relationship is based on two types: the natural form and the deliberate form. There are people who are related by natural forms, like family members. Additionally, one may enter into a relationship through a conscious form, which may include friendship, marriage, or colleagues. This is not the same for friendship because it is only based on one form: the deliberate form. This means that people choose to be friends, but they are not obligated to be friends due to natural aspects.
  2. Legal Aspect of Friendship and Relationship
The legal aspect exists in a relationship but does not exist in a friendship. In the case of disagreement between business parties, family members, or marriage, one can seek legal intervention to solve the dispute, while at the same time allowing the law to enforce the legal values. This explains why there exist written documents in various types of relationships like marriage, business partnerships, and employee versus employer relationships. The relationship is highly based on a contractual or legal basis, rather than emotional appeal. On the other hand, the legal element is not available and cannot intervene in case of disputes between friends. It is essential for individuals to understand that one cannot legally challenge mutual consideration in the case of friendship.
  3. Win-Lose/Lose-Win/Win-Win
Apparently, the relationship between various individuals and friendship between persons mostly depends on sacrificing one individual’s goals to help other people achieve their goals. In most relationships, the level of sacrifice is higher such that there will always be a loser and a winner. This means that one person has to sacrifice the most, while the other enjoys the benefits. This may not happen in friendships because all parties in a relationship work towards ensuring that every person is comfortable and well-catered for by the union. This means that, although some parties may sacrifice for others to benefit, the win-win situation seems to prevail where friends share equal powers and benefits.
  4. Openness in Friendship and Relationship
The level of openness about emotions and feelings tends to vary from friendship to relationship between individuals. The level at which people share their feelings and emotions about various aspects in a friendship seems to be higher compared to the level at which people share their feelings and emotions in a relationship. One is likely to tell their friends about their perspective towards the organization and its leadership, but it is difficult for an employee to tell the manager of the agency how they feel about the direction of the company. However, there are exemptions in several types of relationships, such as love and marriage, where people share their emotions and feelings with a high level of openness.
  5. Termination
The other important factor that differentiates relationships from friendships is the termination process. It is easy to terminate a friendship but very difficult and involved to end a relationship. Friendship has no legal basis, and one joins willingly. This means that the termination process will not include a legal aspect, and one will leave willingly and terminate the friendship. However, some forms of relationships cannot be discontinued. For example, one cannot end the relationship between them and their sister, nor can a mother terminate her relationship with her children. Besides, other forms of relationships require legal intervention to be discontinued. For example, the relationship between business partners can only be terminated through legal means.
  6. Terms of Existence
Lastly, relationships are partly governed by the terms of existence, while friendships are fully governed by the terms of existence. For example, the level of trustworthiness is much higher in friendships than in relationships. If one is not trustworthy, they relinquish the friendship tag, but one can be in a relationship where the level of trustworthiness is shallow. For example, it is possible for brothers not to talk to each other, but their relationship is bound by blood and cannot be terminated despite having a bad relationship.
